After our coffee break we went to dinner at Carmo, a tropical cafe. I found the place online after searching for the best vegetarian restaurants in New Orleans. I can see why it was so highly recommended – the food was incredible!

Unfortunately, the New Orleans weather took a turn for the winter worse today. It’s cold and dreary, and we simply aren’t prepared with the right clothes and baby gear (the forecast called for better weather, I swear). And the museums we wanted to check out are closed on Mondays! So our day has turned into a hunker-down-in-the-hotel kind of day, which I guess is just fine, considering how much time we spend running around like crazy people in our normal lives.

We did venture out for lunch! We went to a little café called Carmo.

Café Carmo got its start as a tiny lunch spot in the Warehouse District serving a refreshingly different (and often meatless) tropical cuisine, which is by turns Brazilian, Southeast Asian and altogether novel.

After an overindulgent holiday season, the start of a new year marks an appropriate time for your body and palate to break completely from the norm, resolve to eat a few more salads and a lot less steak, and cast away for cuisines unbeknownst to you. For that, we direct you to Carmo, a tropical café tucked away in the heart of the CBD.

Café Carmo and Satsuma Café are two popular lunch spots that have quickly carved niches for themselves — Carmo for serving a refreshingly different (and often meatless) tropical cuisine in the Warehouse District, Satsuma for bringing the farm-to-table approach to its coffeehouse setting in the Bywater.

Cafe Carmo also is Brazilian, but it doesn't follow that script at all.

Week before last a food critic buddy of mine suggested meeting at this little Warehouse District joint for lunch. When he said the address it seemed familiar enough, and that’s because its about 150 feet from my new office.

This brazilian cafe is a nice break from the traditional Creole cuisine or even Southern comfort food. This is like heaven for the vegan/vegetarian.

It has been one crazy summer for this New Orleans eco-traveler, with weeks spent getting several high-profile projects off the ground for my "MADE in New Orleans" brand, REpurposingNOLA (re-purposing the 2010 Super Bowl banners into cool stuff, mentoring a local high school in the Brees Dream Trust Your Crazy Ideas Challenge, and designing new pieces for the line).

Our Commitment

From the very beginning, we made the decision to make Carmo as sustainable as possible.
